Abstract: CamamuBay,anEnvironmentallyProtectedArea,maybeaffectedbythepressuresoftourismandoil explorationintheadjacentcontinentalplatform.Thecurrentqualityofthemangrovesedimentswas evaluatedbyporewaterbioassaysusingembryosof Crassostrearhizophorae and byananalysisofbenthic macrofaunaanditsrelationshipswithorganiccompounds,tracemetalsandbioavailability.Porewater toxicityvariedfromlowtomoderateinthemajorityofthesamples,andpolychaetesdominatedthe benthos.TheGrandeIslandsamplingstation(Station1)presentedmoresandysediments,differentiated macrobenthicassemblagesandthehighestmetalconcentrationsinrelationtootherstationsand guidelinevalues,anditwastheonlystationthatindicatedapossiblebioavailabilityofmetals.Theorigin of themetals(mainlybarium)ismostlikelyassociatedwiththebariteoredepositslocatedintheGrande and Pequenaislands.Theseresultsmaybeusefulforfutureassessmentoftheimpactofoilexplorationin the coastalregion.
