ABSTRACT: The use of combustion in industrial and domestic activities is of paramount importance for economic and social development. Even with the promotion of energy alternatives to reduce the use of combustion, this will be an energy generation mechanism still widely used, either through the use of natural gas as a less polluting fuel, as well as from the use of synthesis gases from biomass gasification. However, combustion reactions are the main sources of emission of atmospheric pollutants, such as CO (carbon monoxide), NOx (nitrogen oxides), volatile organic compounds and particulate matter. Given this reality, it is necessary to study new combustion techniques, as well as the correlation between them in order to bring greater sustainability to combustion. The objective of this work was to correlate the oxygen enriched combustion technique (OEC - Oxygen Enhanced Combustion) and the pulsating combustion by the acoustic excitation of flames, forced by an external source, evaluating the effect of the use of these techniques in the atmospheric emissions of CO and NOx and on the temperature of the exhaust gases in diffused and confined natural gas flames. For this, an experimental burner was developed with acoustic actuation systems through a loudspeaker and enrichment of the oxidant with oxygen. A 23 factorial experimental design was used, where the controllable input factors were: input voltage at the loudspeaker (signal amplitude), level of oxidant enrichment and equivalence ratio. The optimized conditions of the studied variables were determined through the use of the regression equation for each variable. The results showed a good representation of the regression model found. By analyzing the data, it was possible to identify which factors have the greatest effect on the response variables, as well as to observe a general trend of reduction in CO emissions with the enrichment of the oxidant with O2 and also in some conditions with acoustically excited flame. It was also possible to identify a reduction in NOx concentrations for flames enriched with O2, with the inclusion of sound excitations to the flame. It was also evidenced the antagonistic behavior of the concentration of NOx with that of CO. The designed burner was validated through validation tests, which showed acceptable deviations from the values found in the experimental tests, in relation to those found by the proposed regression model. The results found show that the techniques of OEC and pulsed combustion applied together and in a controlled way can bring gains to reduce pollutant emissions and increase the efficiency of thermal combustion equipment, since there was a significant reduction in CO emissions that shows the increase in efficiency, in addition to a reduction in NOx emissions for the condition of joint application of enrichment with O2 and sound excitation of the flame.
