Abstract: The management and preservation of air quality require information of the environmental status. Such information involves both cognitive and interpretative features. Networks and measurements for monitoring, together with emission inventory of sources, are of great significance for the building of the cognitive representation, but not the interpretative one. Air quality control demands interpretative tools that are able to extrapolate in space and time the values measured by analytical instrumentation at field sites, while environmental improve‐ ment can only be obtained by means of emissions reduction from a systematic planning by using tools (mathematical models of dispersion) adequate to link the causes (sources) with the effects (pollutants).
