Title: Avaliação de competências transversais de estudantes de engenharia: proposta de um sistema associando escalas de autoavaliação, avaliação por pares e por professores

Abstract: Transformations on a global scale, driven by technological development, have been
demanding a new profile of engineer. In addition to technical knowledge, it is necessary to
train professionals with transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication,
creativity, among others, to develop sustainable engineering products, processes and
systems. In this context, Higher Education Institutions (HEI) must provide the development
and assessment of these competencies. Recent researches and normative documents on
engineering education around the world present this scenario of changes. However, they
highlight the lack of scientifically validated instruments with psychometric quality for the
assessment of soft skills. To shorten this gap, this study investigates to what extent it is
feasible to assess transferable skills of engineering students during the execution of
teamwork, associating the perception of different evaluating agents. The researchers
propose a system for assessing engineering students’ transferable skills (SACTEE, in
Portuguese), that comprises transferable skills assessment questionnaires (QuACT, in
Portuguese) in the scales of self-assessment, peer and teacher assessment. The Design
Science Research (DSR) was the selected research method in association with guidelines for
the development of psychological instruments. The literature review allowed identifying soft
skills required of engineers and mapping the existing methods for assessing these skills. The
researchers collected evidences of content validity comprising, besides the semantic
analysis, analyses of the representativeness and relevance of the items. The reliability of the
instruments was assessed by means of internal consistency. Confirmatory Focus Groups
(GFC) with professors from public and private HEIs analyzed the usefulness and replicability
of the system. The study involved altogether 147 students, 23 teachers, and 8
representatives of the academic management of the HEI where the research was conducted,
as well as 15 representatives from other public and private HEIs. The results of the study
demonstrated the psychometric quality of the instruments - evidence of content validity and
internal consistency - and the replicability of the SACTEE, thus contributing to reduce the
existing gap in this field of research and in the practice of HEIs for the assessment of
students' skills.2023-02-28T00:00:00ZModelagem computacional aplicada a análise de similaridade e filogenia das proteínas

Abstract: With the increasing number of protein sequencing data, the first step in identifying this
macromolecule is to compare proteins to identify their similarities with known proteins.
This similarity analysis can identify evolutionary relationships between the compared spe cies. Similar sequences imply species that share a recent common ancestor. However, the
sequences are not always conserved in evolution, so in this case, a comparison with the
more conserved structure can be an alternative to searching for evolutionary relationships
between proteins with the same function. This work analyzes the similarities of protein
sequences from different species to classify them according to their evolutionary charac teristics using one-dimensional cellular automata to represent each protein as an image.
We calculated the distances between the automata images using the Hamming distance.
This distance measures the similarities between the cellular automata images, and we
use it to analyze species evolutionary relationships. We also propose modeling using the
hydropathy profile difference to analyze the differences that occurred in the structures of
the SARS-CoV-2 variants throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Our method efficiently
approached species of the same animal class and variants of SARS-CoV-2 that share the
N501Y mutation. Furthermore, using the difference in the hydropathy profile, we can see
that the Omicron variant underwent a significant change in the RBD region that may be
related to the cases of reinfection for this variant.2023-03-08T00:00:00ZCOLETÂNEA LITERATEC 2023

Title: Biossíntese de celulose bacteriana a partir de Gluconacetobacter hansenii e aplicação no desenvolvimento de biomateriais: caracterização e avaliação das propriedades

Abstract: In recent years, bacterial cellulose (BC) has been the object of much research due to its high potential for
application in areas such as biomedicine or materials, as well as because its biosynthesis is
environmentally friendly. The BC is characterized as a homopolymer and is differentiated from vegetable
cellulose by its properties, highlighting mainly the biocompatibility and biodegradability of the materials
produced. The production of BC composites with various polymers is an effective method to improve their
physical, chemical and structural properties. Within this context, the objective of this work was to produce
BC and apply it in the development of biomaterials, characterizing and evaluating its mechanical, barrier
and morphological properties. For the production of BC, the Gluconacetobacter hansenii strain (ATCC
23769) was used, where we opted for the static fermentation process with different carbon sources
(glucose, mannitol, sucrose and xylose), varying between two concentrations (25 and 50 g-L
-1
). To obtain
the different formulations, montmorillonite (MMT), collagen, starch and glycerol were added to evaluate
the new characteristics of the BC-based biomaterials. In the production involving the addition of MMT,
the BC membranes were exposed to concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 2% of this compound. As for the
additions of collagen, starch and glycerol, nine formulations were produced using the casting technique.
The formulations were characterized in terms of physical and barrier properties, morphology and thermal
stability. The results obtained were statistically evaluated to define how the concentration of starch
and/or collagen interfered in obtaining a biomaterial with characteristics suitable for use as a biocurative.
The results showed that G. hansenii presented better BC yield with the use of glucose in the concentration
of 50 g.L-1
. The incorporation of MMT significantly improved the mechanical and thermal properties of
the membranes, exposing extended degradation temperature and a decrease in water holding capacity
and an improvement in water loss rate. As for the addition of collagen, starch and glycerol in the
formulations, the water activity, solubility, moisture, thickness, water vapor permeability, weight, opacity,
elongation and tensile strength were directly influenced by their composition, configuring the
performance of the formulations produced in different potential applications as biocuratives.
Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy demonstrated, for all the biomaterials produced, that the
addition of biopolymers to the cellulose matrix made the surface compact, which also influenced the
visual aspect. Thus, the results obtained showed that the BC modified with the evaluated compounds
presented interesting data for further analysis of their properties, considering their potential applications
in different areas, such as the production of new technologies based on biocuratives, favoring the growth
of the biomedical industry in this area.2022-01-01T00:00:00Z
